Dan Conner is the quintissential working class husband: puts bread on the table and ends the day with a beer in hand. It is interesting to note, however, that Dan's work ethic evolves throughout the series, exemplifying how the characters reflect much more depth than what appears on the surface in the first episode of Roseanne. Instead of being an overweight, if not obese, husband and father who drinks too much beer and blows off work to hang out with his buddies, Dan Conner is a man with dreams and with passion. His desire to own the bike shop ultimately earns him a high place on the blue collar pedestal.
While Dan Conner never comes close to earning an upper level income, what he does earn is just as significant: a living for his family. The Conner's never go without food, clothing, heat, shelter, or even a few extra's. They survive, and even thrive, despite their lower income, and Dan has proven himself as a character millions can relate to - struggling to get by but with a smile on his face.
